STEVE MACKALL

“The Man Who Can Do The Impossible”
The Los Angeles Times

Every night on NBC, you can hear the voice of Steve Mackall promoting the “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Saturday Night Live.” It’s the same voice that created a revolutionary new sound that changed the attitude and tone of promo announcers throughout the nation. Today, the “Voice of God” announce, literally an industry standard since the advent of television, has more often been replaced by the “guy next door”, the “audio blogger”, that makes you feel like you’re hanging with a good friend.

That’s what Steve Mackall does. He makes the impossible, possible.

He takes an established and accepted belief like, “Kids hate bedtime” and turns it into “Kids can’t wait to crash!”

Steve did exactly this with “The Blanket Show”, a half-hour animated pilot he created for MTM Entertainment.

As writer/producer/songwriter, Steve’s hip, irreverent, yet enchanting and fresh approach to this nighttime ritual did for bedtime what Sesame Street did for learning, made it fun! “The Blanket Show” starring Forest Whitaker and David Hyde Pierce features six of Steve’s original songs performed by Cece Winans , Randy Travis and Taj Mahal among others.

Steve’s “anything’s possible!” attitude got him thinking, “Hey, let’s write some movies!” In Hollywood everyone from the cable guy to a checker at Ralph’s has a screenplay, yet in short order Steve wrote the mob comedy “Avenging Angelo,” and went into production with an A-List cast including, Madeleine Stowe and Sylvester Stallone. Another of Steve’s Comedy/Drama feature films, ʻStealing Carsʼ premiered in the 2015 LA Film Festival and was honored with their inaugural Zeitgeist Award. A 2016 Sony Pictures release, the film stars John Leguizamo, Emory Cohen, William H. Macy, Felicity Huffman, and Heather Lind with Director Bradley Kaplan at the helm and ‘Dallas Buyers Club’s’ Rachel Winter producing.

Steve’s joyous ability to manifest the impossible took flight again in creating, writing and directing the hilarious mockumentary, “Sad Ass Desert Dogs: The Mystery of Jay Dee Rock,” described as “ʼSpinal Tapʼ meets ʻNashvilleʼ with a Who-Done-It thrown in.” With a limited budget, it should have been done with musician friends who owed him but, in true Mackall fashion, Steve asked some of the greatest musicians in the world to star in it. And “Why not? It’ll be fun!” Today The Sad Ass Desert Dogs is a music/comedy fan favorite starring Steve, Danny Nucci, the incomparable Lee Sklar (Lyle Lovett, James Taylor) Vinnie Colaiuta (Sting, Herbie Hancock, Jeff Beck), Mike Finnigan (Crosby, Stills & Nash, Bonnie Raitt), Mark Campbell (Huey Lewis, ZZ Top, Michael McDonald) and Brian Otto (Brian Wilson, Monty Python, Weird Al Yankovic).

Perhaps the greatest of Steve Mackall’s professional achievements to date are his solo shows. The first, ʻWherever I Go There We Are’, featured a series of sound- designed stories that had audiences laughing and crying and jumping to a standing ovation every night. Steve’s impeccable ear and uncanny timing allowed him to tell his soulful stories flawlessly, hitting every sound cue intricately woven throughout the masterfully scored piece. Its one of the reasons the Los Angeles Times labeled the Cleveland native “The man who can do the impossible.”

Steve’s follow-up ʻThe LAF Supper’ premiered at the Santa Monica Playhouse in Los Angeles with a pair of sold out benefit performances that had audiences laughing all night long! Academy Award and multi-Emmy Award winning producer Arnold Shapiro said of the show: “In “Annie Hall” Woody Allen strung together a number of short scenes- many from real life- and made a wonderful and hilarious movie. Steve Mackall has done the same thing with “The LAF Supper.” The concept, developed out of so much of his real-life experience, is brilliant.”

Whether its voicing commercials, writing scripts, hilariously hosting live shows and benefits or making strangers laugh in line at Whole Foods, this talented, lovable founder of The Writers Bloc continues to follow his heart right into yours.

Steve has won numerous awards in commercial and broadcast Advertising, been honored for his charitable work with the American Red Cross and Athletes and Entertainers For Kids, is a recipient of the LA Film Festival’s Zeitgeist Award, HBO’s “Comic Of The Airwaves” Award

and a Finalist in the 15th Annual American Songwriters Competition.
